I'm probably late to the game with this one, but I find this would be helpful if you have a similar skin to mine and are debating whether or not to get this palette. I HAVE HIGH QUALITY SWATCHES. GIRL, I GOTCHU! TBH, this is my first time purchasing anything from Urban Decay as I'm not much of a makeup junkie, so I do not have another Urban Decay eyeshadow palette to compare to. As you may know with my obsession with skincare, I don't feel the need to dive that deep into makeup other than eyeshadow. Otherwise, I'm more of an au naturale kind of gal, ya dig? Skincare is my foundation.
I bought this palette hoping to find the warm, neutral red tones flattering on me. I've seen this on a couple YouTube beauty gurus with similar eye shape and skin color to me, Pony Syndrome, and Frmheadtotoe. So I ultimately decided to purchase this palette for $54 at Ulta's online store.
Unboxing, the Packaging
The details are appreciated.
You are given 12 shades laid out from lightest to darkest, left to right, including 5 shimmers and 7 mattes. The palette feels heavy, not cheap. It uses a magnetic closure rather than a snap-on closure. The packaging design is of good quality: red and orange metallic printed design with vertical, raised plastic ridges and a clear plastic sheet with raised gold lettering on top, giving a 3D effect. It comes with a double-ended brush with soft fluffy bristles. Also very nice. I'm not in love with the style of the printed design, but it goes with the theme of heat I guess. I am reminded of a car overheating on a deserted road when I look at this packaging - melted rubber tires and all.
Note: I hear there are dupes out there with very similar packaging but the design is just a flat printed sticker, so I hope that this description is helpful to you as you shop around. Be wary of dupes, don't be swindled!
Here are the colors on my arm. Go on, have a look.
I've sectioned these color by fours, and they are listed left to right with descriptions below them. Feel free to click these images below to take advantage of the high resolution photos and get a closer look for your reference.
Ounce - Sheer, champagne shimmer. The glitter is pretty dispersed. I'm not sure what this shade does other add a little glitter? It kind disappears into my skin and leaves behind a whisper of sparkle.
Chaser - Light nude matte. The shade is really close to my skin tone. I'm not sure if I would reach for this one very often.
Sauced - Light, orange-brown matte. This shadow would be the transition shade for me. I might even dip between this one and Chaser to lighten it a bit.
Low Blow - Medium warm brown. This one I can see myself using the most at the outer edge of my lid. I'm a sucker for medium brown shades they help me shape out my eyes without making it look intense or unnatural.
Lumbre - Tara cotta with gold shimmer. This shade, along with the other shimmery shadows, are my favorite. I love the dimension and uniqueness of this shade.
He Devil - Warm reddish brown matte. I love the color, however there is a little fallout with this one. This shade goes naturally with Lumbre and Dirty Talk.
Dirty Talk - Coppery satin. This is highly pigmented, however this is a lot of fallout.
Scorched - Metallic cool-tone reddish brown satin. Love, Love this shade. It's so beautiful and fiery.
Cayenne -Medium-dark warm-toned brown matte. A little fallout, but buildable.
En Fuego - Cool-toned dark reddish brown matte. This color is almost burgundy.
Ashes - Dark brown matte. This is one of my go-to outer-corner-of-the-lid kind of shades.
Ember - Metallic dark brown satin. The shininess in this shade is so satisfying. Another favorite.
An Eye Makeup Look
I played around to see how the colors looked on my face and to see what kind of look I could pull. This is the warm, smokey look I ended up with. I think with my yellow-tone skin, the warm colors complemented me well. I see myself going for this look again. I usually am not that adventurous when it comes to color as I almost 100% of the time reach for brown eyeshadows, so this is a nice acclimation into a little more color as far as eye makeup.
The formula for these shadows are smooth and buttery. These are highly pigmented. One tap of the finger, and you realized you picked up more than you expected. The colors blend together easily, and they're unique and beautiful. The range is versatile enough for every day looks and unique enough for intense going-out looks. We have neutral matte browns for depth, highlighting brow bone shades, and dazzling shimmers for that bit of extra flare. With high pigment, comes a bit of fallout, and that would be my only downside. But fallout can easily be brushed off. Overall, I'm excited for my new eye shadow palette.
